Last Fish of 2011!

    Good (windy) day with Ian McCorrmick and his son Kyle. We beat hte odds and actually caught some fish on the last day of the year despite the 20+ mph wind. Kyle ended up with a limit of NICE trout and the boys kept a couple for dinner.

    Great guys to fish with and I look forward to fishing with them again this summer at Bald Head Island.

Had a father son trip today with big Mike and little Mike from West Virginia. The new moon threw us a low, low tide and it took a while before the fish started biting. After picking through the small throw backs, we finally landed some nice flounder. Most of the fish caught today fell for live shrimp just before the peak of the high tide.

Fun morning with Mike Wells- hi daughter Courtney, son Kyle, and newphew Cody... We started with some great speckled trout action then the fish just quit biting- but the kids hun in there until we found some hungry redfish-

4th grader - Kyle Wells got the inshore slam! With a speckled trout, redfish, and a flounder...

Great morning with Darin Burbank- his sons(Max and Sam)- and his father-in-law... Max scored with a redfish on the first cast! I think everyone got in on the redfish action- And Sam had the big flounder of the day. Ended up with enough fish for a couple of dinners on Bald Head Island!

Picked up Capt Chad and a buddy - despite of the 15kt winds and headed to a spot just off the beach. It paid off. We ended up with 14 flounder and several big red drum. Capt Chad is holding the biggest which exceeded 50lbs. Guess I will have to get some bigger scales!
All the fish ate pogies on a flounder rig. Dont be afraid to use small baits because the flounder would have nothing to do with our 4-5 inch baits. Most all of the flounder prefered the 2-3 inch pogies.

That's A BEAST!

Good fishing trip with Southport Resident - Barry Morris- his neighbor Bob and Barry's son Ryan... The morning was slow to start but the boys hung with me till we found enough hungry redfish, trout and even a black drum... We also had a blast with the 4' bonnet head sharks on ultra light tackle...

Ryan caught a NICE 5.4 pound trout that had to be released- due to the NCDMF closure until 6/15- but we got the photo and it was an impressive fish!!!!

I had a charter cancel at the last minute, so I decided to have a day to myself to try and get on some fish. Capt Chad Casteen joined along to take the day off... The flounder are starting to show up, and the spanish are everywhere. I went out just offshore of Oak Island and landed 9 Flounder, one monster spanish on a lite line, and a 35 in cobia.

The water was slick calm and the spanish were jumping everywhere until the tide changed. The boats just offshore of me were killing the king mackeral and big cobia. Looks to be a great summer of fishing!

Went out flounder fishing with Capt. Chad today and caught several nice fish. We fished the falling tide using live pogies as bait. A few fish fell for the pearl white berkley gulp shrimp, but all the big fish hit the live bait. Several reds were in the slot, and two were over 30 inches. This was Chad's first flounder of the year. Not a bad way to kick off summer.

3/27/11 Fishing- Inshore

Capt Chad and I set out for a couple of hours out of the house before the rain set in- Threw some artificial baits this afternoon- the fish were not on fire-by any means- but it was still a nice afternoon on the water!!! Things getting better- the water was 59 degrees pretty much everywhere we went- and saw the porpoises massacring the reds and trout!

Think it's been the longest winter ever- but hopefully it's starting to warm up and it will be time to go fishing soon!

    Just to let everyone know we are still here!!! We have run a few commercial trips this winter but the fishing is slow-(due to the cold winter we are experiencing) The inshore water temps are in the mid 40s and there still are a redfish around- but they are in survival mode not in feeding frenzys now. NCDMF has closed speckled trout fishing until further notice because of the cold!!!

    Only a couple of more months and things will be off and running again. With all of the new fisheries regulations remember May 1 is the opening for grouper fishing- I expect the fishing will be great when it opens up - since these fish have not been fished for for 4 months! If you have any interest in going the first part of May please give us a call 866-395-FISH- The first couple of weeks will book up fast and we are going to be running a special to make it a little easier for you to get in on the action!

    Other than that we are in the process of getting boats ready for fishing season- as well as updating the interiors of the waterfront condos we offer. Hang in there - hopefully this winter will give in early and we will be back on the water and catching fish soon!!!

Casteen Inshore Report

Made an inshore trip with my father-in-law Capt. Tommy Bradsher to give his new 22 foot Carolina Skiff it's madien voyage shake down. With perfect weather we made way toward some of Capt Tommy Rickman's and Capt Brandon Dean's trout holes that lived up to expectations. We had a great day on the water with constant action and even invited a few back to Brown's Landing for dinner.

Offshore Report

Had a little free time so decided to make an offshore trip with Capt Brandon Dean, Capt Jason Mcdowell, and Marshall Frink. The morning started off with unsettling weather that finally gave way to clear skies. We managed a little of everything; Snapper, Grouper, Jacks, Bass, Mackeral, Bonito, etc. Looking foward to the American Red Snapper fishery opening, so it won't be catch and release only.

Just getting pics in from late October trip. Had a wild bunch from North Carolina Tyson poultry industry down for the late October nearshore King Mackeral and Red Drum bite. These are the guys the fish should worry about if they ever go into the fishing industry.

11/11/10 - More Good Trout Fishing...

    Had Southport's Bob LaBlanc and his friend from Mass- Rick. These guys were a hoot all morning- (two of the most die hard Boston College Football Fans ever!)

    The fishing was good even thought he wind kicked up above 20+mph by 10:00 am. We found several schools of trout (with a few big ones mixed in)and even a few redfish as well. Rick got a do battle with a nice red or two.

    Kept a few for dinner and threw most back... I'd say we probably had 25+ trout for the morning and 3 or 4 reds. Great to fish with these guys!

Great Fishing 11/10/10

    Had Jerry, Terry, and Tony on board. Try getting all of those names straight with the fish chewing down! Great guys- and we did great on the fish- Had 20+ reds, 20+ trout, 2 black drum and 3 flounder. Action was great all morning and had a couple of times we had triples on... A lot of small fish but some really nice ones mixed in throughout the morning.

    Terry got the inshore slam- with a flounder trout and red- and Tony may have as well- got pretty hecktic on the first stop...

    Great morning with three great guys- and I hope to do it again soon... Only regret was that I couldn't join them for dinner (fresh fish) that night!

10/22/10 Afternoon Good Fishing!!!

Rob Millet and I headed out for the afternoon- and he did great on the redfish!!! We also had a nice trout to go along witht he 20+ redfish Rob caught Friday afternoon... Had all sizes of fish- Rob had the big fish of the day a nice 30" red.

As always good fun with Rob!!!

Here's a nice slot fish Rob caught- 24" looked like a football!!!

Ross Goldbaum and his family and I had originally planned on going king fishing Friday morning- however due to some motor problems we switched gears and hit the creeks and bays in the 22' Pathfinder.

    About 10:30 Ross looked at me and said "I sure am glad your motor broke"!!! That's because we were wearing out the redfish, black drum and even a few trout. His daughter Kate and son John and I had non stop action for three hours when we found a massive school of fish...

    Had to be one of the best morning of 2010- hands down!!! 30+ redfish(a conservative estimate), 8 big black drum, and 3 nice specks.   Used close to 15 dozen shrimp- it was off the hook!!!

Inshore- 10/19/10- Parilla

Bill Parilla from Southport , his friend Marshall Rockford- and I set out for some inshore fishing. We had about 10 more mph winds than we wanted -but made do and had a blast catching redfish- (even though most were small) - we had doubles on several times and we broke Marshall's record of 19 in a row (set in Florida under a mangrove tree). I think we ended up with 34 total. We also had some nice speckled trout mixed in as well. They guys headed home with plenty of fish for a couple of dinners. Great fishing if you like lots of action!

Here is Tim Vallilee from PA with a couple of nice red fish and several trout caught floating live shrimp on a popping cork during a rising tide. Tim boated 20 reds one having six spots on its side and 8 nice speckled trout. It was perfect weather and a joyful trip with a retired pilot from PA.
