Spent a morning with Bob Kohlmeyer and his friend George from Northern VA. These guys wanted to fly fish and that was fine with me. George had never caught any saltwater fish on the fly- so we targeted redfish. The wind was howling- not exactly what you would call a good day to fly fish but these guys really wanted to go so off we went.
Had a couple of bites on the first spot but no hookups- I think they were specks. Checked a couple more spots- and they were blown out- and then headed to the only other place I could fish out of the wind. When we got there we could see a few fishing pushing on the other end of the flat (of course) so we slowly poled up to them- when we finally made it - they were there!
Tailing, Crawling, Waking- call it what you will(they were doing it all)- but the fish were coming down the bank one after another n groups of 1-4. It was tough to hold the boat and even tougher casting. We needed about 20-25' cast and the wind just killed the cast EVERYTIME! If I got any closer the fish would spook.
George finally hooked a really nice fish- 25"-28" and he got a taste of saltwater fly fishing! This red melted the 9 wt and the fight was on. Bob and I were getting the cameras out when after the battle was almost over the hooks pulled...
We had several more shots but once again the wind was the enemy! I even suggested picking up a spinning rods- and these guys politely informed me they wanted to fly fish not spin fish- I request I can respect.
I would say in a couple of hours time we had 15-20+ shots a reds from 16-30" in a foot of water or less.
After the tide got so low I almost could not pole out- we headed to some trout spots. George hooked and landed a nice black drum. It was great to spend some time with these guys- I know if the wind had not been blowing 25+ we could have hooked many redfish!
