We had planned on fishing Friday- but a sick kid and winds stronger than expected kept me close to home! Had a few reports of some good drum action and when then weather warms up a little I might give it a try.
Had prostaffer Bruce Fields from "The Sportsman Magazine" (in Virginia) come down and hog hunt. He just had one day to get it done(due to the waether) and he shot a nice hog Friday afternoon! Said there was a monster boar that had come by but he had his muzzleloader and didn't want to give the beast a try... We can still bird and hog hunt in this cold weather- got a few Saturdays open in the next two months. Then it's FISHING TIME!!!
Here's Bailey Rickman- with his first Southport Snow!
Went on a quest to find some king mackerel- had to run 45 miles up to the northeast- got there and the water was perfect- plenty of false albacore - but the kings were scattered out - ended up with 17 kings- the largest about 22 pounds. Much better than sitting around on land- or standing on hard floors at boat shows!
Had a friend who fished inshore- and he reported no bites. Had to cancel today's inshore trip due to the weather- probably a good thing.
The BIG black sea bass are biting- if you want to go give me a call- limit is 15 per person and they are really good to eat- should be available all winter- if your coming into town and need a place to stay we'll work that into the deal as well.
With all of the cold weather- and windy - we have been(and are going to attend) several boat shows this winter- It's not fishing - but at least we can stand around and talk about fishing- right?
Thanks for all of you who stopped by the booth at the Raleigh Boat show last week. This week we are out to Richmond, VA to setup the booth and will be there for three days.
Capt Chad Casteen- is bluefin tuna fishing today- so hopefully we will have some info this afternoon!
It's been too cold to fish-(most days) but we have some great wild hog hunting in Jan/Feb/March. It something fun to do when it's too cold to fish and usually you end up with some good eats! At $225 a day- it's affordable as well. If you need a place to stay give us a call we'll be happy to work with you on that as well! 866-395-FISH
Here's one that got turned into link sausage last week!
Great flyfishing trip with Steve Kezman and Trey Vinson!
Trey got a small redfish on the first stop- on a Dupree spoon fly and then we made a move- Steve hooked a really nice red but the oyster bar made the fight short lived. A couple of cast later he scored on a 22" speck that fell for a clouser.
Made a couple of more stops and the tide was ripping in(so the redfishing was pretty much done by 8 am). Finally found a school of specks that were hungry and the boys put it on them with the long rods! Close to double digits on the specks!!! Good day with two great fly fisherman!
Bob was unable to make the trip on Friday so he and his son Robert jumped on board for the Sunday afternoon trip... Also along was Jill -Robert's wife who turned out to be one heck of a fisherperson... At one point I looked at the guys and said "man she's kick everyone's butt"! Had a great trip with PLENTY of fish. Robert got his largest redfish to date and Jill caught some really nice black drum.
I was facinated by Bob's hunting stories (most recent - a brown bear hunt in Alaska)- and the afternoon flew by! A great family and I'm glad I got to meet them all!!! Jill with a nice black drum
Usually this time of year things are pretty slow but the fishing is always some of the best of the year... Had two trips on Sunday- and both turned out to be unbelieveable trips.
In the morning I had some really great guys from East Tennessee- owners of Smith and Wesson and Shrade knives- Stuart Taylor, his two sons Carson and Morgan, along with friend Tim-
We started off a little slow but then found a real nice school of redfish with a few black drum mixed in. Most of the reds were small but everyone managed some nice slot sized fish and a couple over the 27" mark... Great fishing! Carson with a nice slot size fish...
Capt Brandon Dean- had a great trip with Dave Walton, Alton, and Jordan, and all from Chapel Hill. They caught over 40 redfish, and a black drum or two mixed in as well as some specks and even a flounder- The fish are biting - NOW... You can even catch them wearing a Carolina hat- that's how good it is!!!
Had three great people onboard - lucky for me they were visiting Bald Head Island for a family wedding! Tim Hassett (from Greenville, NC), his father-in-law Bob and I were suppose to go fishing- however Bob was a little under the weather so his son Blake and girlfirend Jen took his place...
We had the perfect morning- catching tons of reds (30+), as well as some nice specks and flounder... 3 INSHORE SLAMS! Jen also got a nice black drum to inhale a live shrimp...
Had an equally good fishing day on day two. Capt Chad Casteen was unable to make the trip so Bobby Sands a local author joined us for some beautiful weather and good fishing.
When we got on the fish Noel broke out the fly rod and caught 2 reds and a nice speck!
